What to do after a leak or storm
Take a breath. Most roof problems can be handled step by step. Here's a simple, safe order to follow.
- 1
Put safety first
Stay off the roof and ladders, especially when wet. Keep away from downed power lines and call the utility company if you see any. If water is near light fixtures or outlets, turn off power to that area at the breaker only if you can do so safely.
- 2
Protect what's inside
Move furniture and valuables away from drips. Set out buckets or towels. If a ceiling is bulging with water, keep people out of the room.
- 3
Take photos from the ground and inside
Photograph stains, drips, and any debris or missing shingles you can see from the yard. Note the date and time. These help with records and, if you choose, an insurance claim.
- 4
Call for an inspection
We'll inspect the roof safely, document what we find and explain your options. You don't need to decide anything on the spot.
- 5
Decide on next steps
If you have homeowner's insurance, you can review your policy and decide whether to contact your insurer. Coverage decisions are made by your insurance company.
